St. Chad's Church

Welcome to St. Chad's. This is the oldest building in Stafford, with a history reaching back into the twelfth century. Many generations of people have worshipped here and made their contributions to this fine building. The names of some of them are recorded in our parish registers which date back to 1636. Yet this represents only a part of our heritage of faith which stretches back to the time of St. Chad who was the first Bishop of Lichfield (669-672) and beyond that to St. Augustine who established the English Church in the year 597. This strong sense of continuity with the Church of our ancestors is part of our tradition at St. Chad's.

When celebrating Mass here I am often powerfully aware of those priests and people who have gathered at the altar in centuries gone by, and with whom we are still united in Christ as he comes to us in the Blessed Sacrament. Yet St. Chad's is also the church's "shop-window" on the main street of a busy county town, and the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is for the people of today.

We like the church to be open as much as possible so that passers-by may come in and be surprised - as they often are - by the beauty and antiquity of St. Chad's, and let the building speak more eloquently than words of the Catholic and Apostolic Faith upon which it is built. Establishing a Website opens our doors to many more people, and I hope that those who visit on the "Net" will experience something of the spiritual dimension of our church as well as its history and architecture.
